Barney Schwartz Park is a hidden gem. It’s a few minutes from the Paso Robles city center and right off highway CA-46. It is a nice smooth walk/roll for those with mobility issues constructed with paved pathways. If you want to just sit and relax there’s plenty of flat areas for that as well, equipped with a beautiful nature-rich pond.
If you like to fish, my understanding is they stock it with rainbow trout, catfish, and sunfish. You can access a fishing spot from the pathway if you are in a wheelchair. I have done some fishing in the past and know how hard this is to find.
Some of the paths are a wee bit hilly if you are in a manual wheelchair or have difficulty walking but with a little scouting it’s highly doable. There are 3 parking lots. For your first visit it may be best to check out the third parking area where the pond is and the main picnic area. This is the highest elevation of the park, and you can see the pathway layout. After that you can find out what will work best for you.
As for amenities there are grills, and wheelchair accessible picnic tables near the sports fields, The third parking area has a kids playground. Theres also a picnic gazebo which can be reserved if you have a party or event. Another important feature we all need is a handicap accessible bathroom! As a wheelie I know the importance and these bathrooms have quite a bit of room, grab bars and roll under sink.
If you go with people who like sports activities there are three sports fields that are used for local games but available to use when not occupied to picnic or play ball. The websites online say no dogs allowed but I have seen multiple people walking their dogs so if you have a pet dog that’s well behaved and leashed, I do not think there would be an issue.
Overall, it’s a quiet place to enjoy the lunch and enjoy the outdoors. Theres occasionally events there such as music festivals and 4th of July festivities. The park is worth checking out! Hope you have a great visit like I did!
